Message from the Helm

Dear Mariner Families,

This week, we celebrated our custodial heroes on National Custodian Day! Mr. Chris, Mr. Elias, Mr. Manny, and Mrs. Noreley keep our school clean, healthy, and friendly all year. We couldn't do without them!

Key Information:

  • Picture Day is this Thursday, October 9th. Dress your best! This picture will be used for the school yearbook. The picture day flyer went home earlier this week.

  • Save the Date! Our Annual Book Character / Vocabulary Parade will be on Friday, October 31st at 9 am. Parents and family members are invited to line up along the car loop starting at 8:45 am to watch the parade.

The School Board of Orange County Public Schools approved the 2025-2026 Code of Student Conduct. Please review the Code of Student Conduct as a family.

Have a great weekend!

Yours in Education,
Jessica Swain
Principal

Together We're Unlimited

Logo of the ADDitions School Volunteers Program.
It would be very difficult for Avalon Elementary to operate without its devoted and dedicated volunteers (ADDitions) who work so diligently assisting in the Helping Hands Room, classroom events, attending field trips, and helping teachers from home. The ADDitions volunteer application must be completed and approved every year in order for volunteers to assist us. The form is available online HERE and must be renewed annually.

Thank you, Ms. Mehrman, for passing the Energy Bus to me. This week, I'm passing the bus along to Ms. Waltz. Ms. Waltz is always #3, fueling our ride with positivity because she always has a smile on her face, and #1 being the driver of her bus because she is determined as a first-year teacher. My team and I love what a wonderful addition Ms. Waltz has been to the 2nd grade team.

School Procedures and Safety

Avalon Elementary Family Handbook

The Avalon Elementary School Family Handbook includes information about our policies and procedures. For information about safety and severe weather procedures, please make sure you review it.

Standard Response Protocol

The OCPS website provides detailed information about our district’s Standard Response Protocol. The safety of your children and our school’s staff is always our priority. We want to take this opportunity to share the difference between a SECURE and a LOCKDOWN. A SECURE means no students or staff outside the building, no one can come in the building, and students and staff may not leave the building. The difference between SECURE and LOCKDOWN is that in a SECURE we continue business as usual inside the school, so teachers continue to teach and lunch service goes on as usual. Students will have indoor recess on SECURE. The administrative team also walks the hallways to check on teachers and students during the SECURE. During a LOCKDOWN, lights are off and students and all staff are out of sight, hiding in the safest area of the location they are in. In a LOCKDOWN, no one can move from their location until they are cleared by law enforcement. We take student safety very seriously, and we want to ensure everyone understands the district's Standard Response Protocol.
